Hackney BC named 'Council of the Last 20 Years’
Hackney Borough Council has been named the ‘Council of the Last 20 Years’ at the 2016 Local Government Chronicle (LGC) Awards.
The award, sponsored by Zurich Municipal, was presented at the LGC Awards Ceremony in London on 16 March. Hackney BC beat stiff competition from six other councils.
In particular, Hackney Borough Council was commended for its outstanding commitment to the local community. During the past two decades it has renewed the borough’s public infrastructure, secured the economic legacy from 2012 and set new standards for inner-city education.
The judges said that Hackney Borough Council’s work over the past 20 years is a “compelling story of innovation and exceptional transformation across the whole range of services, with a clear focus on delivering leading services for residents.
“Hackney has led the sector in showing that areas of high deprivation can also be areas of high achievement. It is a real game changer.”
Hackney Borough Council was among six councils shortlisted for the title in January, each of which was recognised for sustained local government innovation to support the delivery of public services over the last 20 years.
The other shortlisted councils for the prestigious award were: Gateshead Council, Westminster City Council, Hertfordshire County Council, East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Blackburn with Darwen Council. The ceremony marked the 20th Anniversary of the LGC Awards.
Andrew Jepp, director of public sector at Zurich Municipal, said:
“For the last 20 years, Hackney Borough Council has demonstrated a dedication and commitment to its community that is second to none. Its success in delivering huge improvements in services to its local community over the last 20 years not only demonstrates its aptitude for innovation, but shows its courage too. It is therefore only right that such an impressive success story is recognised – not only to celebrate the work of Hackney Borough Council, but to inspire other councils too.
“We’re delighted to sponsor this award and to support the LGC awards more broadly. In today’s tough environment, it is important to celebrate the successful work of local councils up and down the country.”

Nick Golding, editor of LGC, said before the ceremony:
“It is vital that we celebrate the best of local government, not least as the talent and innovation of council officers and councillors is often not recognised to the extent it should be.
“The recipients of the awards are the people doing the most to improve services at a time resources are constrained. It is only right that we thank them for their great work.”
